DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY
An Overview of the Department: The subject History of the college began its journey when it got permission from Dibrugarh University as general subject in the year 1988. It obtained approval for introducing History as Honours subject in 2020. There are at present 30 sanctioned seats for Honours. There are three full time teachers in the department. Besides teaching the Department organises class wise seminars and prepares students for Group Discussion so that they keep pace with the time. The students can express their views independently through their writing in the wall magazine and teachers offer all possible support in this regard. Teaching methods adopted to improve student learning: With the traditional Chalk and talk method classes, the teachers adopt special interactive method by applying group discussion, seminar, question answer, demonstration method to encourage the students and thereby improve their learning. Besides, Home assignments are given to the students to gather knowledge. Participation in Institutional social responsibility and extension activities (NSS, NCC, Scouts and Guides, Youth Red Cross etc.) NSS, NCC. |

33. SWOC analysis of the Department and future plans a) Strength of the Department: 1. The cordial relationship between teachers and student is the most noticeable features of the department. All faculties are easily accessible to the students and the students can easily express their difficulties unhesitatingly. 2. Sincere initiative is being taken by the department to train the students to participate in group discussions, seminars etc. And thereby try to inculcate in them the spirit of creative thinking and competitive spirit. 3. The department has collection of books which is easily accessible to students comprises of approximately 100 number of books and references for the greater benefits of the students. b) Weakness: The Department has some limitations- 1. The foremost weakness of the department is that, college provided major courses in 2020 for which student enrolment are not up to the mark. 2. Due to economic backwardness of the majority guardians, sometimes of the year, the students have to engage themselves in agricultural activities. 3. Lack of sufficient permanent teacher with special group is another noticeable weakness for smooth running of teaching learning process. 4. The limited books of course content available in the department seldom used by the student inspite of repeated suggestion to avail the materials.
c) Opportunities: 1. Inspite of having its limitations, the department tries to render quality education, encourages and prepares students for building their higher academic career. 2. Recently, the department has signed two separate MOU’s with Department of History Bahona College and Dr. Nobin Bordoloi College, Jorhat to make learned and experienced faculty members available for the academic interest of the students as and when feasible. 3. Jorhat, being the last capital of the Ahom Kingdom, consisting of various monuments related to the period and also a place that consists of various pious and sacred places of Vaishnavism will provide a scope to the students to carry out research works. d) Challenges: 1. The economic background of most of the student compels them to leave their studies without completion as most of them help their parents to earn their livelihood. 2. Late recognition of Honours in the department constraints the admission in allotted 30 nos. seats of the department. 3. Lack of faculty member with specialisation to impart the course of Medieval group. 4. Geographical distance and lack of public transport hinders the regular attendance of the students.
