INTRODUCTION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY :

Sarbodaya college is the one and only degree college of Dergaon constituency situated in North West Jorhat.The department of philosophy is one of the most significant departments in the college .Philosophy subjects was introduced in the college in 1988 .But the major course was affiliated by the university in 2004.Initially there were a few students in the department but gradually it increases and at present there are more than hundreds students in the department.Now ,there are three (03) permanent faculty members and one (01) non sanctioned faculty member in the department. All the teachers are excellent and dedicated to their service . The result of the department is satisfactory . Many students achieved first class in the final examination of the university in the past years .

Vision : All round development of the youth through holistic education .

Core Value : To enhance morel and human values including honest , unity , discipline, respect for society , nation and nature.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

The philosophy department publishes a wall magazine named SASWAT in every year. Now, it runs seventh edition. It also publishes a news Bulletin named COGNITION and a hand drawn magazine namely DARPAN the mirror. It organizes a departmental freshers on 30th June in every year and celebrates WORLD PHILOSOPHY DAY. The students participate in all the programs and competitions held in the college and able to win many prizes.

SWOC analysis of the Department and future Plans :

a. Strength of the Department :

1. Every teacher of the department is dedicated and excellent .They are qualified as per UGC norms .

2. The teachers are friendly , responsible for their duty and always ready to help the students .

3. The department maintains educational atmosphere in the college .

4. The department reflects unity in diversity as the students belong to different community.

b. Weakness of Department

1. Sufficient books of philosophy are not available in the market. So the changes of syllabus create some problems for both the teachers and students .

2. The students have their language problem as the belong to vernacular medium .

c. Opportunities of the Department: Philosophy is the mother of all subjects. Through the study of philosophy the students will be able to guide themselves. By studying the logic as the science of reasoning, student will be able to know about systematic thinking.

d. Challenges of the Department: 1.It is generally believed that philosophy is the luxury of thinking and it is not for common people . So only a few students show their interest to study philosophy. However ,this trend is gradually changed.

2.Most of the students come from the weaker section , socially or economically .So

,they are compelled to help their parents in livelihood .So they remain absent in regular classes .

e. Future Plan : 1.The department makes plan to develop the departmental library .

2.The department has plan to organize World Philosophy Day and Periodic Lecture in future .It has already applied icpr grant for this purpose .

3.The department already established a medicinal plant garden and plan to devlop it in future .
